Teaching Kids to be Caring and Compassionate

I’ve been giving a lot of thought on this subject. How can we instill compassion to children and what are the activities we can bring to them which might make a difference in how they think about the world?  Even better… how can we influence compassionate behavior in them such as being kind and respectful to animals or
giving a helping hand to those less fortunate?
The biggest question for me was, how can I use one of my gifts to help children become good adults? I posed this question to my Terrier Max during our morning walk . Well, it didn’t take long for Max to turn the light bulb in my head. He said, “Give a card work shop to kids and let them give the money to a charitable organization!” So here we go…. not much time but I am sure we can get some kids signed up for this Love Bug Valentines Card Workshop!

Life Long Learning is Good for Our Pets too!

During these long winter months, we tend to get lazy with ourselves and our pets. Max, my terrier and I did not do many activities during these busy months and we both gained weight! We just started back in agility training at the Seattle Humane Society. These trainings are strictly treat motivated and full of positive reinforcement. Over and over, under the watchful eye of our trainer, Ali Johnson, we worked to encourage certain behaviors such as, “Max, sit and wait” or “Touch and stay” after he completed the Dog Walk plank. Both of us were soon engaged in doing something right and getting a reward that it became a fast-paced game. The more I praised and treated, the more Max wanted to perform and really work hard to get his pay.

2010, Here We Come!

In spite of our shaky economic times, it is exciting to see how we can navigate through 2010 with a fresh, new outlook. I am a firm believer that during challenging times, we are forced to look and think outside of our immediate realm.

I recently joined a Business Mentoring Program at the Washington Business Center. This intimate group is lead by Carole Butkus, it’s Director. She and the group pushes me to think outside of the box and explore opportunities, personally and business-wise to stay ahead of the economic and market curve.

We are studying concepts from a book titled, Blue Ocean Strategy…. How to Create Uncontested Market Space and Make the Competition Irrelevant. Authors are W. Chan Kim and Renee M Mauborgne. This book is Kaizen at its best! I recommend this book highly for anyone who is interested in getting out of the normal way of doing business and exploring new opportunities which await you in the “Blue Ocean”.

Holiday Season and Your Hair

As long as I can remember, holiday season is really tough on hair stylists. It seems like there are always few tears from our clients because their hair did not turn out like they expected.

Holiday season tend to be emotion packed and everyone is under a lot of stress. People are entertaining or visiting relatives and friends from other cities. There are many parties and family gatherings as well. Everyone seems to have someone in the family who picks on them or a mother who might compare one daughter to another.

I always pass a memo to our stylists with this same message every year before the season begins. “Do not make any drastic changes on anyone’s hair. Not even if they beg for a style change. Why? Because people tend to have unrealistic expectations and so much to live up to during this season. Instead, make small changes and create excitement in our client’s hair by:

  • Styling their hair in a special way.

  • Adding few foils to give texture and accent to their hair style.

  • Glossing or toning the hair with translucent color shines.

These small changes will make every client feel special and beautiful, ready to face the festivities which lie ahead!
