A Special Card for a Special Woman

Tama Murotani is beautiful, fashionable, full of zest and she just happens to be 87 years young!  She is a role-model for all women who aspires to be all that I have said about Tama.
Tama recently underwent a successful heart surgery and now back at her downtown condo recovering nicely. I wanted to send her a card which would lift her spirits and create an up-lifting moment when she opens the envelope.
I thought I would share with you what I came up with.
Since Tama is an elegant woman, I used a pale green pearlescent paper and layered the flower pedals on top of each other… then outlined the petals with a glitter glue to give the flower some sparkle. I love creating cards which are personal to the receiver. I hope she will like it!
By the way, when I make a card, I always make another one to keep for myself.

Why I Believe in Training Every Team Member

At Studio 904, every new team member we hire whether experienced or not is required to go through our training program. It takes hours of training for a new hire to learn our technical program, our philosophy, customer service and community giving programs. Studio 904 is a team salon and learning become a good team member is an important part of their learning.
The training is expensive, grueling and time consuming but I believe this is necessary to bring unsurpassed quality to our valued clients in all aspects of the services we provide.
For years, I taught with written materials which describes our step by step cutting systems and the vocabulary which goes with our cutting procedures. I was able to teach the techniques but I was never able to teach the visual concepts, feelings and the passion which goes into our work. I had a difficult time showing that each layer of hair is almost like the fine petals of a flower or adding air in-between the layers of hair can be understood when you watch a transparent jelly fish floating in the water, expanding and collapsing its body as they bounced on top of the ocean waves.
A few weeks ago, I constructed  a training board, using my own drawings. Now I am able to use this board to teach our stylists a more fun way of learning the basic haircut forms and designs. This board is popular with our clients as well. I love to watch them go up to the board and identify their face shapes and exclaim, “Oh, I now understand what styles look good on face shape!”.

Teaching Kids to be Caring and Compassionate

I’ve been giving a lot of thought on this subject. How can we instill compassion to children and what are the activities we can bring to them which might make a difference in how they think about the world?  Even better… how can we influence compassionate behavior in them such as being kind and respectful to animals or
giving a helping hand to those less fortunate?
The biggest question for me was, how can I use one of my gifts to help children become good adults? I posed this question to my Terrier Max during our morning walk . Well, it didn’t take long for Max to turn the light bulb in my head. He said, “Give a card work shop to kids and let them give the money to a charitable organization!” So here we go…. not much time but I am sure we can get some kids signed up for this Love Bug Valentines Card Workshop!

Life Long Learning is Good for Our Pets too!

During these long winter months, we tend to get lazy with ourselves and our pets. Max, my terrier and I did not do many activities during these busy months and we both gained weight! We just started back in agility training at the Seattle Humane Society. These trainings are strictly treat motivated and full of positive reinforcement. Over and over, under the watchful eye of our trainer, Ali Johnson, we worked to encourage certain behaviors such as, “Max, sit and wait” or “Touch and stay” after he completed the Dog Walk plank. Both of us were soon engaged in doing something right and getting a reward that it became a fast-paced game. The more I praised and treated, the more Max wanted to perform and really work hard to get his pay.
